Saving files created by Decoy on Jan 29, 2008:

I'm struggling to get familiar with Lightroom, and have managed to understand so much that I can see it's a great (and cool) program! Must say I love the way it looks! =) When I'm done with some smaller adjustments I want to continue in photoshop, and so far so good. BUT when I'm to save the file in photoshop I only get the chance to save them as tif and larger files? If I want to save them as jpg, is there anything I miss? Sometimes I don't want the files to be 50mb! =) I just realized I was in the "lightroom-group" on Tabblo, and maybe one of you can tell me? Anna

Anna, If you want to edit in Photoshop and have changes reflected in Lightroom, you can't save as JPG (unless you re-import the JPG as an additional file). You can save the TIFF file with layers flattened as 8 bit. That will help.

Ohhh what a suport-group this is! wow, thanks for your quick reply! =) I guess I can save it as a tif, and than re-open it to save it as jpg? But I would like it to be more easy-working than that. One would think it would be enough to flatten it, to be able to save it the wanted way as jpg or tiff. Do you have a hunt of the losses you do if you go with 8 bit? I'll play some more, because there are probably a lot I don't understand yet, as I just started to play in the "develop-part". I guess I'll be back to this forum! =)

Anna, You can actually save it as jpeg. Change to 8bit, 'save as'. However, this jpg file will not be reflected as you switch back to lightroom You will then have to import the new jpg file in order for you to see it. or in the Library module, synchronize the folder and lightroom will find the file for you. I usually do all my editing at 16-bit before i save as 8bit jpgs. But then again, i really dont see the difference. Haha And with lightroom, i rarely use PS, unless needed. BUt my question is, why do you want to save it in jpg format?

I’ll try the savings tomorrow, and see if I understood you correctly.. kind of VERY late here right now, I got stuck in going thrue files, and adding them to lightroom - my new hobby! =) I guess that you only need the 16-bits when printing the images? I can see what you mean by hardly not beeing in need of photoshop any more. I’m thrilled to see what lightroom can do, and I just started to look into it. Actually I found an effect that made me think of you Joaquin (I think I’ll go with Joakim, the swedish way to spell your name, to make it right.. if it’s oki.) When I saw the result of ”direct positive” I thought of your pictures in the chaos-tabblo (I think it was named "chaos"). I think I’ll be using photoshop even with lightroom in hand, though I have a plug-in that I love. Developed by photographers and not computerwizards – beeing very easy to understand as it’s similar to the old darkroom. It works with layers per automatic, I only specify where in the picture I want it burnt, dodged etc. And it has a nice b/w-converter among other things. But when there’s no need for corrections I can understand lightroom is good enough! The jpg is only a matter of space. There are way too many files on my harddrive, as well as my external hard-drive! I’m going through old files now, and I’m deleting a lot. I’m always saving the original as well, and thinking I’ll be a better editer ”tomorrow”, so I see the pictures I do now as kind of temporary! =) If there are pictures I know I’ll print, I don’t save them as jpg. Thanks for your answer, and I’ll try the savings tomorrow! This is the best group ever! =)

Joakim is fine. Nice that I can be called in a different language. :) As for the chaos, i used a 'lomo like' preset and tweaked slightly to suite my taste. 'direct positive' is a fave of mine too (if you notice, the preset sets the curve to an S giving more contrast and punch). Try B&W; with Lightroom. my DREAM tabblo images never left lightroom by using curves, split tone, HSL, etc....am sure you'll discover these as you learn in the coming days. As for space, I understand where you are coming from. TIFF and PSD are HUGE files to keep and manage. But we don't have a choice do we? I already have 3 external drives and over 20,000 images. And I am starting to worry. As for printing, well my final image is 8bit since i really dont print directly from PS. Hope my answer helps. CHeers.

I just posted my first attempt to use the develop-tools in Lightroom! It leaves me with some questions, but still… I did it! =) I can see there’s a lot that can be done in the program. And now it only can get better! =) Thanks, the both of you, for inspiring me to dig into it!
