Created in 1936 by photographers Sid Grossman and Sol Libsohn, The Photo League viewed photography as a tool for social change, believing that photographers should "illuminate & record the communities within which they lived." The Photo League was shut down in 1951 after being designated by the NY attorney general as a "Communist front," which of course, it wasn't. ----------------------------------- Our purpose is to revive The Photo League and once again position photography as a tool to bring about social change. If this is up your alley, please a join. --------------------------------- Please be sure that the Tabblos or photos that you post on The Photo League say something about the social fabric of neighborhoods and community. This is not the place for landscapes, city skylines, empty buildings, family gatherings, or a bunch of people posing. Candid & unposed are the operating words. Ask, does this Tabblo/photo say something about the neighborhood and community building, pro or con? If the answer is yes, then it is probably appropriate. Urban Paradoxes reserves the right to remove Tabblos/photos that do not fit The Photo League purpose.

Please be sure that your Tabblo posts fit the mission of The Photo League. Most do, but every so often, one doesn't. AND I sure do hate to remove a Tabblo.

Thanks,
Frank

Hi Frank remove any of mine you want. My mess of Two was a mistake. When i chose the 2fer group Tabblo decided to enter it in about 10 groups that were not appropriate. I apologized in my comments..As for lagniappe? I wasn't sure...but it is part of the culture of that unique place.

Please send me an email at urbanparadoxes@yahoo.com to be added. Please include your genre and Tabblo URL (if you are a Tabblo member).

If you added your Tabblo and do not see it, it is because of a glitch in the Tabblo Groups. Please re-add your Tabblo. If for some reason I remove a Tabblo (which I will rarely do, if at all) I will send you a message as to why I did so.

The purpose of the original Photo League was to bring about social change through the illumination and recording of neighborhood life through the medium of photography. Your thoughts on this premise please.

I like the notion of this group. Thank you for your invitation. I look forward to coming up with an appropriate contribution as well as seeing what other group members contribute. Thanks again.. Best regards, Roy.

I'll put my two-cents in on the group theme.

I think it's fine, as an ultimate goal. The problem is in viewing it as a requirement for any photo essay submitted. The goal is excellent. In a recent comment to a tabblo I posted a link to Lewis Hine photography. http://www.historyplace.com/unitedstates/childlabor/ I have nothing but admiration for dedicated goal oriented photographers. One of my favorite photos by the photographer I probably admire most is the Pieta like image of mother and child taken by W. Eugene Smith as part of his Minamata series on corporate pollution of local towns. http://masters-of-photography.com/S/smith/smith_minamata_full.html Can anyone think of photography and not think of the great WPA photographic work during the great depression?

Social significance is an admirable goal but a tough one to achieve on a regular basis even if it's a life dedication. So to simplify, I'd suggest - try for social significance but accept social documentation or something of that nature. In other words, something of a view of the life and the times that we live in. Maybe not pics of every office party, but a contrast of a Morgan-Stanley directors Christmas party and a soup kitchen counterpart would likely tell a compelling story and also be an essay on our times.
UrbanParadoxes said at 5:01 p.m. on Dec 22, 2006:
Community and neighborhood are the operative words, hence a view illuminating, or recording, the life and times we live in would be an appropriate post, as would Smith's mother & child. My intent is not to limit to actual urban /neighborhood scenes -- that happens to be my thing, but it is not by far the only way to illuminate and record our ideas of what community and neighborhood means. My grandson was talking the other day about "his neighborhood." Thinking he meant where he lived, I responded from that direction. His reply was, "Grandad I am talking about my class at school." The theme is broad; what I would like to see here in the discussion forum is (1) some discussion about our definitions of community & neighborhood, (2) how photography as a discipline illuminates and records these definitions, and (3) how photography as a discipline might cause these definitions to evolve. Lastly, I think it would be just great, if every time we post a picture/Tabblo to the group we say something about what it says about community, neighborhood, and being neighborly.

The other day I saw a tabblo that to me perfectly represented the theme of this group. I was tempted to suggest that the photographer join but I thought I'd post about it and see what other's thoughts might be.

The tabblo is "Sleeping Dictionary" by Suhud. In some of his other tabblos he paints a portrait of Philippine life that would also suit this group.

"Sleeping Dictionary" is a perfect fit. The Photo League is "open membership." Please feel free to suggest to those whose work fits to join and post. The more that post, the better the accumulated record of life.

Well, I did what I thought I wouldn't do, remove two Tabblos. They were great Tabblos, they just didn't fit The Photo League. Please remember that The Photo League is about recording and illuminating culture and cultural changes within the context of social and/or neighborhood interaction.
