The blades of the iris dilate, the shutter blinks and the relative
spaces of light and dark are exposed onto the film to record a fleeting
moment of time and space. We exist in a deeply visual culture, amidst
an unending rainfall of images to which we are instinctively and
irrevocably attracted as a source of understanding and meaning. We are
conditioned to the devices of mass-consumed images to such an extent
that seeing no longer comes naturally and it becomes necessary to learn
to see what is in front of your eye, because this in its purest form is
what the camera sees. The camera may never lie, but the images it
produces are interpreted in as many ways as there are pairs of eyes to
see them, each focusing on different details, different colours and
different meanings for their own version of the truth.
I do not have a digital camera which means that I only shoot with film
and this is the way I like it! I have a fully manual SLR and get kicks
from setting up each shot to get the best results. I like light and
colour and try to make my pictures a little different and interesting.
