My day job consists of recording audio on location for film & video. This was a shoot we did for a 30 second spot for the Joslin Diabetes Center, which will screen in theaters before the feature film. |
8am - the crew assembles track for a 90 foot dolly shot. It was cold, overcast and looking like rain - not exactly what we ordered... |

The "Video Village", where the director, producer & client view each take. The black flags and black wrap around the video monitor are for minimizing glare on the screen. The Grip Truck - which carries all the gear, including a generator for all our power needs - can be seen in the background. |

DP, Director & the Key Grip view a test run before talent arrives |

By lunch time the weather miraculously improves. Here you can see the Director coaching the talent while the crew stands by for a take - that's me on the dolly behind the DP. |

Director calls action, the littel girl rides down the sidewalk and we track her on the dolly. The 2nd grip walks next to her with a "bounce card" to get some reflected light on the other side of her face |

End of the run - the trick was to keep a consistant distance from the girl to ensure the focus and frame we wanted. That means the Key Grip not only pulls the dolly down the track, but also monitors the girl's speed and adjusts accordingly - all while making sure we don't run off the end of the rails |

It's late afternoon, we have less than 90 minutes of daylight, and we still have a final shot involving a 30 foot jib. the crew readies a 12 ft. "silk" for the key light used in the shot. |

The DP assists Jib Operator Wally Argo as he attaches and balances the camera on the end of the jib. |

The Director walking talent and crew through the last shot, which consists of the girls huddled around the Joslin logo drawn by local celebrity Sidewalk Sam. |

We like what we see... |

...so does the client |

...and that's a wrap. |
This was a fun shoot - good crew, good talent, a worthy cause - and - it gets blown up to 35mm and screened in theaters. How cool is that?
