Sossusvlei Dunes (Namibia)

Sossusvlei is an incredibly beautiful part of the Namib Desert. The dunes here are about 50 km inland from the sea, and are shaped by a combination of the West wind blowing in from the sea, and an East wind the blows across Africa. Some of the dunes are over 1,000 feet high, and in the "dune corridor" each of the really large dunes is numbered. Many have names such a Big Daddy, and Big Mama.

The early morning and late afternoon light paints yellow, pink, orange and red  shades on one side of the dune, highlighting the shapes and curves. It is almost impossible to get a bad photograph here.

Our thanks to Rich of Little Kulala Lodge and the Wilderness Group for their amazing hospitality.

Favorited.... David, these photos are fantastic. I want to see this photos in a gallery really huge! David, did you hear any German spoken there? Namibia was once a German colony but I don't know how much influence South Africa has been... I do hear many speak Dutch or Afrikaans....but I'm not sure what the common language there is.

David,
ever since our trip to Africa we've been wanting to return and visit Namibia -- you beat us to it! These photos are, as always, excellent. I'm sure you had a lot of fun shooting them. i especially like the ones where you can see a person or a tree as a reference point to get some sense of scale.

Fantastic.
