a letter whilst away from home

originally taken by us on december 2006

We have good news and bad news to be shared with all of you, especially our dearly friends on tabblo.

The bad news:

one of our pictures about granite boulders in front of Pulau Babi Isle nearby Cape Tanjung Kelayang within Bangka-Belitung Province had been stolen from the net and being misused as an advertorial image at Klasika page, Kompas newspaper, Indonesia nationalwide circulation, entitled ‘Documentation of Sriwijaya Air’ –-a national airlines.

And this case is wrongly executed by the papers. Our letter never got attention by them and whenever we made a call directly to the person-in-charge for Klasika advertisement pages, said it will be finished by the agency itself, PT Sentra Media Pariwara.

They sent small amount of ‘apologize’ money to us. And they put a very small column in the papers. It said in Indonesian language: Ralat Foto.

It’s funny since the words means “misplacement picture without any credit title“.

This is nothing to do with apologize statement or in Indonesian said as ‘permohonan maaf’ or literally in English can be translated as ‘with our/my humbleness to be forgiven and apologize for this inconvenience’.

The good news:

From now on, we will put watermarks for all of our pictures. Of course can create sore eyes since our names will appears anywhere.

But we take this option of watermarking as our statement against piracy and misused pictures and materials through the net. Hoping all of you can understand and our apologize for this inconvenience.

And the best news, we are heading home from our holiday in southern hemisphere. Then definitely we’ll comeback again to our tabblo :)

Oh how we miss all of you, Guys!

Sincerely yours,

Ukirsari and Nicholas

Thanks for passing the information about piracy. We should all take heed as to what could happen with our photos and without our permission. Thank you.

sure doreen ... first time we're hardly thinking. which is the best? take the very small sum of money and keep silent, or spread this worldwide. money [not about how much or how big in amount] will not buy anything. this is about etiquette and how to respect others. so we decided to tell everybody, in order it will never be happened towards all of you. or at least we know what we should do against the piracy.

Was this stolen from Tabblo or some other website? If it was stolen from Tabblo, did you have your pictures marked as "private"?
Ukirsari-nicholas said at 10:03 a.m. on Apr 17, 2008:
no bill, from our other external website. thanks for your support!

I thought with Tabblo you were protected. I can understand how upset this would make you. You caught this one how many more are there you didn't catch. Very sad!!!

You have my sympathies Ukirsari and Nicholas. Copyright and other intellectual properties laws unfortunately aren't about protecting intellectual property but about protecting the "intellectual property" of the very wealthy and powerful, making them even more wealthy and powerful. The laws are intended for the control of creative ideas and that's not something that the powerful want everyone to have an equal chance at. If your image had instead been a song controlled by a major recording company the possible recoveries would range to as high as ten of thousands of dollars for each copy distributed without permission. Each copy would be each print copy published - each newspaper. But that won't ever happen for you. The laws were never intended to empower you and me.
