When my boys found this turtle in the woods and brought him to me he was shut up tight. He was shy at first and slow, as turtles often are, but eventually he decided he was safe and peeked his head out to say hello. We put him in the grass where we thought he'd be more comfortable and he sat there for a long time until he felt confident enough to venture out all the way and make his escape back into the woods. My boys hope he might come back to visit sometime. . .
