Wildthing said at 11:49 a.m. on Apr 21, 2008: A lot of movement: life struggling by in the night. The last shot crystal clear, & an abandoned lone kart begging the question; 'Where is the owner'? This is a side of Denver that we don't see in the holiday guides. Society - in the main - shuns those less fortunate than themselves, as though poverty & misery may be catching.
Setu said at 11:51 a.m. on Apr 21, 2008: I felt I passed by at the speed of 100 :-)
Pkeener said at 11:53 a.m. on Apr 21, 2008: The first shots were taken from my car as I was passing by...was hoping to get a feel of desolation, disorientation, sun setting, night falling, etc. The last shot was taken a few weeeks later. loved the irony of the prisine new spring day, flowers of hope blooming, the cart sitting there...

EMA said at 12:37 p.m. on Apr 21, 2008: I understand the symbolism of these photographs. The desolation and sadness in the dark photos and, in the light of last the image, we can find Hope in better days.
LatentE said at 12:59 p.m. on Apr 21, 2008: This reminds me of the men's shelter that was around the corner from where CBGBs used to be on The Bowery. It was the reason that was the place you would see "Bowery bums." Then in the '80s the mental institutions were emptied and the mentally ill were put out on the street. The "Bowery Bums" suddenly were everywhere. In the same vein of disdain, the never to be mentioned "class warfare" was begun, making sure the fictional Cadillac welfare queens never got another nonexistent Cadillac. The mentally ill homeless were joined by families of out of work poor. Today homeless people on the streets are an accepted standard of America. They're lazy, unlike the investment bankers who are at this moment receiving billions of taxpayer dollars to keep their banks from going broke while the classless class that bought homes through deals that Shylock would have been ashamed of, from these very same investment bankers, join the Bowery bums of America, homeless. But remember, government aid to provide medical treatment for children is too much of an expense for America. Oh well. Let's put on our flag pins and sing "America the Beautiful."
Andre. said at 1:00 p.m. on Apr 21, 2008: Very really-really real, Pam's style:)
Pkeener said at 1:09 p.m. on Apr 21, 2008: RIGHT ON LATENT!!! I have tons of photos of people standing in line on cold nights, waiting for a meal, and a cot. the park across the street is usually full, if it's a sunny day. But these photos become generic. mind numbing. i could have posted some really good closeups of the faces. But, i feel exploitave when I take these shots...
Thank you Andre and Ema. Theirry Oscar and Seanan. I appreciate your joining in the monday blues...and Bessie Smith

Bxrgirl27 said at 1:27 p.m. on Apr 21, 2008: Although this is titled down & out it it photographs as a very pretty place. The exterior is well kept - the signs are cool retro & in good working order and it's landscaped very beautifully - looks like maybe a place of hope, too? ( I totally get the meaning in your title -I just see something else here too) :-)
Leftofcenter said at 1:28 p.m. on Apr 21, 2008: konnekshun!
Leftofcenter said at 1:29 p.m. on Apr 21, 2008: cool, Laura's in blue too!
Pkeener said at 1:47 p.m. on Apr 21, 2008: Laura, you couldn't always say that about this block. And the surrounding area. It's all part of the urban renewal that has been going on in Denver for the past few years. A few short blocks away, and it's another story. But the Mission is a place for hope for the down and out. Thank you for your insightful comments.

Lifequest22 said at 8:20 p.m. on Apr 21, 2008: In Hopelessness--if we look long enough, we can find hope. We have a stretch of road with various social service agencies that remind me of these shots. I too drive by them often and see the blur of activity on the sidewalks. Here in Tampa, we have many homeless, especially in the winter.
Oldbogus said at 9:04 p.m. on Apr 21, 2008: Laura is right, IMO; this is a place of hope, or at least refuge. And the mentally ill weren't dumped on the streets; they were liberated from their prisons. Or something stupid like that.
