My Folks

This is a picture of my folks in Paris two years after  World War II and four years before coming to America. I came along a year after this picture was taken.

Ladies, the hat was black with a rose colored bow. Gentlemen, the suit was made with artifical fibers of the time and was known to fall apart within a year or two.

Great photo of a great couple. They look like they belong together. Like the hankies in both pockets. And the hats. Your dad's fedora is really cool. too bad we let that fashion tradition slip away. My parents never went out without a hat on.

Thank you all for your kind comments. I found this picture in the bottom draw of my father house last week. It spoke of a happier time despite the ravages of war. Pam, I agree with you about the fedora, they can make a man feel like they are Bogart. The same cannot be said for a baseball hat. Mike, those were the bikes' of their time. I guess if you have a country that came up with the Tour de France the bikes would be further evolved. As to the details of the outfits, my mother seem to have had perfect recall despite the sixty years that had pass which made the picture more multidimensional for me.

Your parents made a lovely and stylish couple. I love the hats on both of them! I wish hats would come back big in fashion - the style and the way you wear them say a lot about the person, but in a more elegant way than baseball hats.

sober elegance. it's a classic of that era. did your parents (and you) come to America from Paris? there's the RETROSPECTIVE group for these photos, you'll be able to scan and post more of these precious memories!

Annalie, my mother was a Parisian and my father was from a very small village about fifty miles outside of Paris. When war broke out my mother was sent into the country where my great grandmother lived, where she eventually met my father. We came to America in the early fifties where they hoped to make their fortune and eventually go back to France. It never happen, no fortune, no France and no marriage. The war brought them together and the war tore them apart. Thanks for info on the RETROSPECTIVE group.
