I think the hardest part of a Science Fair Project is picking a topic. I tried to take pictures of a diverse range of projects.

The project to the left is I think what most people think of when they think Science Fair Project. It has elements of chemistry and physics and he built the apparatuses. Its a great project, but its not the only kind you can do.

This project got a 2nd Place award at the State level.

There were a number of excellent food science projects.  Food is non toxic, easy to work with and a great source of experiements in chemistry, biology, nutrition

Another food science project

I saw a number of interesting projects focusing

on construction materials. In addition to this one there were a number on

concrete and one that tested different roofing materials.

Do you like CSI? I was able to talk to the girls who did this project when I judged the Somerville High School Fair. They worked at an actual crime lab while doing this project.

This experiment was done on children at the day

care center at their school. It tested whether the children did a puzzle faster

if they were praised while they worked or if they were told they got a prize

when they finished.

There are rules about using both human and animal subjects

but they are not insurmountable. Many projects use them.

This used guinea pigs and she won a 2nd Place prize at the State Fair.

At the State Fair there are 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention. There are multiple winners at each level and there are cash and prize awards as well as schollarships.

You can see in this picture that she used a microphone connected to her computer. She then used a program to analyze the sound.

There is a tremendous amount you can do with sound and a PC.

I also have a microscope that hooks up to a computer so you can take pictures and do measurements on your computer.

Environmental science is very popular. This project made it to the State Fair.

This is an example of a Mathematics project.

This project tested the strength of arch voussoirs and won 3rd Place at the State Fair.

Won 2nd Place at the State Fair.

Won 1st Place at the State Fair!

3rd Place at the State Fair.
