My first attempts at night photography...this is a zooming technique, not the same as panning.

 

I went with my photography class just for a fun outing. We had a good time, and people kept stopping us asking"who are you with?"

 

They thought we were doing a real "shoot" so people really hammed it up and wanted to be photographed.

WOW! ... so what do you do? Do you zoom in as it's going through the long exposure? ... definitely had to use a tripod, to keep the lines from squiggling all over the place. .. the building are static though...?

Dar, you pretty much have it..you can do this in shutter priority or "night landscape"if you do shutter, set your f@ f11,16 or 22 all will be clear, and you get starbursts and ghosts...manually focus on a fixed object. In this case the sign. Use a tripod and cable release...the exposure was around ??30 secs? not sure ,but first I zoomed OUT, focused, and as I hit the shutter release, slowly and smoothly rotate your zoom all the way back to wide. Then try it reverse for fun! :)

Really cool and great shots!! My grandson and I tried this with Christmas tree lights, did not use a tripod though, so got a different effect. Yours is awesome, with the straight lines.
