ahh how much the school wastes on computers

Who was that guy whose scull you found among the wires? LOL
Sirnicolay said at 11:00 a.m. on Jun 6, 2008:
Thanks, Charles! :)

Andrew, no worries.. The school upgrades computers for you guys. We have to keep up with the technology. No idea what will happen to the old ones. Maybe they will be donated. And if you guys get lucky, there will be new iMacs coming next week for Mac Lab 1, I think. And of course, they should have Leopard OSX already. There might be another Mac lab to be opened soon where the older versions will be kept.

Bill, the skeleton's pic is actually part of the science lab set I took (many of which I featured in the previous tabblo). :) I don't think it's real. Haha!

I think that must be 'Bones' out of the old Star Trek series. All that hardware makes me wonder how I grew up without what they call modern technology. I'm glad I did. Someone should pull the plug & see how many folk could go back to a slower way of life.

The title says it all. I agree with Mike, sometimes, we just need to unplug, go outside and enjoy what nature has to offer. Great photos and love the quote.

Easier said than done, Mike and SterlingGray, recently we had a one hour power failure and I almost burnt down my house with all the candles. I grew up without it, but now I am one who cannot live without modern technology. SAD.

GREAT tabblo!! I opften think about going to an island with ONLY a pencil and some paper. But, I must admit...i LOVE my iMac

Mike, I think I can survive without modern technology. I know that David is right, it's easier said than done. But I actually experienced a year without TV, computer, and radio when I was 19, when I tried out a seminary for a year. It was one of the best years of my life. I learned to plant sunflowers, I read so many books, and I found a deeper sense of freedom and peace. I actually have a secret longing to retire as a monk after I exhausted my worldly desires. I know that sounds like a tall order, but I know I can do it. :)

Sterling, thank you! Right now in my life, I still depend a lot on technology. My gadgets (cellphone, camera, laptop, mp3 player) are always with me. There's hardly a day that passes in my conscious life when I don't check my personal accounts in the different websites I go to. I love reading and dreaming to own future gadgets. But this too will pass. Other things will matter soon. That's inevitable.

David, I'm sorry to hear that. But we're in the same boat right now. It's quite inevitable to live normally RIGHT NOW without technology. It's a sad reality that I wake up into every day.

Pam, same here. I love my mac so much. LOL. :)

I could not do without my cell phone or computer either... or camera (lol)... but I wish they would not get outdated quite so quickly. What to do with all the old ones??? Every person you meet or see when out has a cell phone to their ear... I hate that... try not to be one of them... it's hard tho... ;)

Jodi, I also dislike the sight of people getting obsessed with cellphones.. Sometimes, I really just put my cellphone away in order to be free from being too connected with everyone. LOL...

Deb, good for you.. I wish I could do the same, but I'll be busy next week. It's the start of classes here in the Philippines. I'm back to teaching mode again. haha!

Thanks, Annabelle, Woody and Ray :)

Great images for the concept. I love the quote and I think we're living out the truth in it.

cher i'm not worried about whether or not the school gets new computers. actually, i think the school wastes too much on them. i doubt that we even need those 2.++ ghz macs for the simple tasks they make us do in the labs :/
Sirnicolay said at 8:31 a.m. on Jun 7, 2008:
Thanks, Allan. :)

Andrew, it's not about upgrading.. The school aims to provide more computers. The school aims to have 1-to-1 computer education. It just happens that Apple updates their mac models quickly for the same price. That's why the computers seem to get upgraded now and then.

Sorry to have to quote again but they say it better than I........"The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom." ~Isaac Asimov's Book of Science and Nature Quotations, 1988........
I'm struck by the insidious, computer-driven tendency to take things out of the domain of muscular activity and put them into the domain of mental activity. The transfer is not paying off. Sure, muscles are unreliable, but they represent several million years of accumulated finesse. ~Brian Eno, Wired, January 1999 Another profound and thought provoking tabstory James. I go on 'retreat' as often as I can, had a Jesuit priest in our family and I just stopped watching tv 4-5 yrs ago...read, read, read! ~ pmc :-)

nice tabblo kinda sad in a way but cool nonetheless.. the skeleton probablu belonged to some poor computer technician that got lost among the jungle of wires there .. do hope the old computers finds their way to those that cant afford it but will appreciate it the most ...

ah, technology, we can't live with it, but we can't live without it. This is a cool Tabblo and the skull lends an interesting element to it.

Bobbie and Teo, yes, technology goes with time; they're both unstoppable. Thanks!

Thank you, Edite. Sadly we do need technology. I just hope that everything doesn't get upgraded quickly.

Patty, thank you for the two thought-provoking quotes. :) Yes, we should read more often than go in front of the computer hehehe.

Farid, you're right. I hope that these computers will be donated as charity. I still don't have any idea what our school would do to them.

Thank you, Edite, Den and Noe :)

Great photos! I've really been enjoying the hardcore starkness of your black and whites!. ... Love your wisecrack too, ... but James, tell me truthfully, when was the last time your wore your shuffle? <G> ... We're all guilty, and the E Waste in third world countries is piling sky-high. Sadly, not many of us are willing to give up our tools and toys, so the most we can do is buy responsibly. http://www.greenpeace.org/international/campaigns/toxics/electronics/how-the-companies-line-up

Also, I think most computer companies, Apple include, will take the used computer off of your hands if you buy directly from them, just what the companies do with them afterwards, though is much harder to find out.
Sirnicolay said at 12:16 p.m. on Jun 10, 2008:
Last time I wore my shuffle? I can't remember. I lost it last year. LOL. :) But I use my iPod Classic almost everyday hahaha. Yeah, technology does have its perks. You're right. We are responsible for our own way of supporting technology. We should be its master--not the other way around. :)

"We should be its master" : that's right, Sir. I lived half of my life with very little technology, but, I assure you, washing cloths by hand was very tiring, but there is no need of drying them with a machine, it's very usuful to have a mobile phone sometimes, but on holiday, there is no need to call family, friends and so on every day or write hundreds of messages, I used typewriting machine at work, but it's much more comfortable the PC....and,how could I be in touch with America, Australia, Philippine, Russia, Japan etc and have a lot of friends to show my photos to, my SPECIAL photos taken 10 minutes before with my digital camera ? But my books, and nor diamond, were and are my best friends! Ciao a tutti
Sirnicolay said at 12:38 p.m. on Sep 5, 2008:
You're right, Mirella. Technology is here to stay. We have to deal with it. :)
