jewel of nature

drinking sugar water right from my finger...see it's proboscis extended?

This is the chrysalis of a Monarch butterfly.

I have been saving and protecting the caterpillars.

I keep them inside my screened pool area, and feed and care for them until they pupate.

They love to crawl under the leaves of my orchids.

It is such a joy to see a new life emerge. They dry their wings in the sun for a while, and then I release them. I have 3 like the one above, and 2 Monarchs emerged yesterday, and off they went...  :)

I keep lots of Florida milkweed in my garden, so they can perform the entire life cycle on the plant.

Nature needs all the help it can get!   :)

Oh wow, this is great! So cool that you take care of them and get to see the lifecycle. Beautiful images! I never see caterpillars in my garden. I probably need to plant the right kind of plants to attract them.

The Monarch chrysalis is quite different than the swallowtail isn't it? You are performing a real service-keep up the good work!!!

BEAUTIFUL photos!! We have some bronze fennel growing in our garden (I planted it several years ago and it keeps volunteering itself in new places every year:) and swallowtail caterpillars seem to love it...they strip it bare by the time they are ready to pupate...I just keep one or two plants especially for them and try to keep them off the others:-)
