Moreno at Le Quecumbar, London

When I visited London in April 2006, I knew I just had to go to Le Quecumbar, one of the world's premier gypsy-jazz clubs. The place has live gypsy-jazz music 7 nights a week.

As luck would have it, one of the absolute masters of gypsy jazz, Moreno, was playing a one-night-only show at Le Que during my visit. So I went with my friend Simon.

A Quecumbar van, complete with a portrait of Django Reinhardt, was

parked outside. It was covered with signatures by all the contemporary

gypsy-jazz greats.

When we entered Le Que, it was like we'd entered the 1930s. Old paintings and posters were everywhere.

Moreno, the guy with the gray hair, was a fantastic guitar player. His rhythm player was good, as well.

Moreno pulled out a few tricks during the set: He played with a wine

glass, and he and the rhythm guitarist played the same guitar at the

same time -- a trick I hadn't seen done before.

Thanks, Jackie! It took me a while to figure out which layout to use -- it was a fun decision, though.

Adrian, what a fantastic sorry and a great London spot that I can't wait to check out. That wine glass trick reminds me of one of the late Danny Gatton's signature gimmicks. He would start a tune using a closed bottle of beer as a makeshift slide. In the middle of his solo he would open the bottle, take a few swigs and continue using it as a slide with beer frothing over the fingerboard. His finale was wrapping his hand in a towel and finishing his solo while wiping off his guitar's beer-drenched neck. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Gatton)

And if you ever get a chance try to find footage of the late Stevie Ray Vaughn and his brother Jimmie playing a double neck Strat simultaneously. Pretty amazing.

Wow...love it!

Felt like I was there....but unfortunately, not. (From Chicago and love the jazz...this stuff is up my alley...) Thanks for sharing!
