Breaking All The Rules

Every year, on Canada day, Victoria kicks off the Pride week's festivities with the Annual Marcus Tipton Memorial Drag Ball Game.  It's a great way for us queer folk to celebrate all that we have to be proud of and let down our hair, ... or slick it back or put it up in curlers, whichever the case maybe.

Rules are meant to be broken at this event. Men dress up as women, women dress up as men, and for those who feel that their gender identity lay somewhere in between, they just come as they are and enjoy the freedom of expressing themselves. The rules of the ball game are loosely adhered to as well; no one ever remembers the score, bases are occasionally awarded when someone breaks a heel, loses their hat, or breaks a nail, and the bases themselves are not always where you'd normally expect them to be.  It's common to see more than one player on a base at one time, after all, it is a social event, and the kings will often exercise they're chivalry by escorting or carrying queens to the next base.

Everyone has a great time; there's more than enough laughter and community spirit to go around, for straight and queer alike. Theres food, there's music and there's dancing, and there isn't a better way, in my opinion to celebrate Canada day or Gay Pride.

Happy Pride everyone, whoever you are!

In Québec, on Canada Day, people move!! ok- back to the tab. for some reason these images make me think of KC & the Sunshine Band (or was it the Village People? Thanks Jodi; I'm Glad I made you smile. :)

Thanks Mom; I can't even figure out how people walk in those things let alone run!

Annelies I guess the first day of the month isn't such a good day for a holiday for some. ... I did have a great time. ... I think the kc and the sunshine band feeling you're getting comes from all that hair, and the retro cloths, I guess, but that fashion seems to be pretty big around here, so you can see that normally, not just at a dress up event like this one. <G>

Noreen, and as always, you are very gracious with your compliments :)

Thank you Ira; I'm glad you enjoyed the pics, and even though a little was lost in the translation, I can tell that you understand.

Bobbie, I came out ten years later than your friends, and I suspect it was alot easier for me than for your friends; what happened to them, did they get stuck? ;)

Jude: Um... I wore my grey socks, with my sandals (hate getting dirt between my toes) but they were Mc Gregor happy feet, does that count? <G>

What a fun event and what a great tradition. Pride in Syracuse is so tame in comparison. Happy Pride!
AliDar said at 1:24 p.m. on Jul 7, 2008:
Thanks everyone for popping in and sharing the laughter and the smiles. It was a great day.
PAM, I took a ton of photos that day, but there were only a few that I was pleased with and that close up of the outfielder was one of them. LINDA, I know! He was the only Queen wearing sensible shoes; I think he must have a lot of lesbians in his circle of friends. <g> The high heels though were part of the fun, as were the bathing suits, which were a new addition this year, maybe they're easier to run in than a sequence gown, who knows, but it did leave a lot more pale skin exposed, so I'm sure many went home with a sunburn that evening.
SHIRL, I wish I had read your comment before I went out to the festival yesterday; Alison and I both got our annual festival sunburns! <G> ANGELA; at the ball game I was just wearing my normal cargo shorts t-shirt and ball cap, but yesterday I wore a retro plaid shirt without any sleeves covered with all of the pride related pins I've collect since 1985. HOLLY, yep, she's carrying someone over her shoulder; I'm still impressed with your powers of observation though; I couldn't quite figure out what that t-shirt said. <G> PAUL, Syracuse must be a small town, but I'm thinking that even though it's pride festivities are tame, the size must create a nice close knit community. Big isn't always what's it's cracked up to be.

Thank you all very much for your wonderful comments! XXXXXOOOOOO :)

You are welcome. Glad I could enjoy your Pride Event virtually, Dar.

BTW, does anyone know what the hand gesture showing the back of the hand and holding down the two middle fingers, and holding up the index finger and the baby finger means? - got it a lot from people this weekend when I photographed them. I think it's a good thing, but I don't know for sure. ... Unity maybe?
JuDeck said at 9:54 p.m. on Jul 7, 2008:
Dont know what the hand signal means, I'll look to see if people are using it here in a couple of weeks. I did finally catch the double meaning of your title though. Took me a while, I got it ;)
