This rusty ol' steam engine & coal car sit along Hwy 81 about 30 miles south of York at Geneva, NE...
Above & right you can see where the engineer stood & where the coal would be put... My Grandfather was an engineer on just such a train in the 1920's, 30's & 40's...
These photos were part of a MTMTE tabblo I made in June... I decided to make a variation for Den's "Antique - Rusty - Vintage Group"... ;) |

An added note... Thanks to a friend of Bob Myers (Moabjeeper) who says, "That old loco is just that—old! It is an engine that was used to switch cars in a yard or around a factory. These kinds of engines didn’t go out onto the mainline very often. They were made for slow speed (you can tell that by the small driving wheels) and since it has no lead or trailing wheels (trucks) it will also negotiate small radius curves. This is actually one of the larger switch engines made as most had four or six driving wheels. "
So it's not actually like the ones my Grandfather drove... although in his later years he did do the switching in the RR yard in Grand Island, NE where they even had a Roundhouse for that purpose... |
