Out of the Sky: 9/11, a Tribute by Werner Pfeiffer

On Thursday, September 11 Syracuse University Library Associates sponsored a lecture, "Out of the Sky: 9/ll, a Tribute," presented by Werner Pfeiffer, sculptor and book artist. The event took place at Syracuse University's Bird Library in Syracuse, NY.

Pfeiffer, a native of Germany who emigrated to the United States in 1961, witnessed the tragedy first-hand. His book is a sculptural tribute to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In the lecture, he  assembled "Out of the Sky" while commenting on the technique and inspiration behind it.

Like most of my books Out of the Sky is an interactive piece, which requires a hands-on attitude to 'read' and construct the story. It is a three dimensional book consisting of a group of large woodcuts in the shape of two towers, each over five feet tall. Instead of following a horizontal direction here the movement is vertical. Each tower has seven segments which are stacked over a support structure.

Art from tragedy. Paul--such a creative artist and looks like a piece of spectacular performance art to pay tribute. Thanks for sharing with us.

After such a tragedy, it is very difficult to look at this tribute. To remember the souls lost, is unbearable.

Interesting, ... I suppose it's not a bad thing that something beautiful could come from such a tragedy? I'd be interested in reading what he wrote. The act of constructing the piece seems somewhat therapeutic.... Thanks Paul, I'm going to see what I can find out about the artist online.
