We Remember

In keeping with our tradition, Tony and I went to a cemetary last night to pay respect to the graves of soldiers. The cemetery on Madison in Lockport has a memorial to veterans. As you can see, the flag is at half mast for the holiday weekend.

As we worked our way further into the cemetery, we began to realize that the dates were getting older and older. Soon we began to see the tell-tell shapes of civil war soldiers. They're almost alway white  and made out of a type of sandstone that has almost always worn away the letters with time.

"God alone understands."

I'ts impossible when visiting a cemetary not to notice other graves. So many baby and small chirldren. Always sad. Then there are the interesting symbols  marked on some of the headstones. Masons? Lady masons? Memebers of the Moose Lodge. I've included a number of the ones that we found interesting.

The star above Alice's name appeared on a couple of tombstones. We'd never seen it before and wondered what it was.

This one was so covered with dirt it took a few minutes to get enough rubbed off to see what it was. This is the reason we come - to remember those who've been forgotten.

1823 was the oldest tombstone we saw, but we didn't get through the whole cemetary either. One refrence referring to the "Order of the White Cross" is asociety for Lawyers.

Two things: The one on the left was next to her husbands grave who died before her. We're guessing she must be buried somewhere else, so the family had this made so she'd be near him.

Second, the one on the right - this sort of thing upsets me. I don't understand why people have to vandalize cemeterys. This stone was a much older one and the more the weather beats on the face of this, the inscription will soon be gone.
