'Closed'

A pub with no name.

The sign has gone,

windows and doors are boarded up,

No one will drink in here again,

and that's a shame.

Laughter once filled this empty place,

now ghosts and cobwebs fill the hollow space.

The future's here,

the past is dead,

change is all around.

The good old days' of yesteryear,

are nowhere to be found.

The older I get, the more I seem to reminisce, RICKY.

Cheers, SANDY. So many businesses are closing down. And I still don't really know why we suffered a worldwide recession.

nice words Mike &so true in many places

Thanks, CONNIE and JOE. Seems we haven't come too far in the last fifty years. There is less and less security for the masses. No job seems to be safe, and people are naturally worried about an unstable future.

beautiful Mike...really great stand alone....your poem so full of longing for what was.......
SnowWhite said at 4:49 p.m. on Nov 5, 2009:
Superb image. Hopefully one day the building will have a new lease of life.
Wildthing said at 5:25 p.m. on Nov 5, 2009:
Deb: I took this into the sun, hence the dark result. When I down-loaded it, I felt it needed a few words added. As they come to mind I write them down. sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't:)

LORRAINE: I thought you would have asked me where that was! Glad you like it.
EMA said at 6:40 p.m. on Nov 5, 2009:
It's sad indeed!. As far as I know there are hundreds of pubs closing their doors for good, all over England, since the smoking inside prohibition. Your photo is excellent and the poem great. Cheers! :)
Wildthing said at 4:34 a.m. on Nov 6, 2009:
EDITE: The smoking ban HAS had an effect. Maybe they should have a percentage of smoking pubs for balance. Serve all the people, not just a majority. Minorities are certainly legislated against. I am personally sick and tired of government deciding what is good and what is bad for me. The fumes from busy motorways is seriously affecting people's health, but nothing is done. And although there is now a proven link between cell phones and brain tumours, they will not ban their use. Many life-threatening pollutants are ignored. There is little common-sense involved, only big businesses and greed. I'm glad you liked the pic and poem:)

I find the photo interesting in that it depicts sunshine that doesn't bring light with it, so to speak.
Wildthing said at 12:42 p.m. on Nov 6, 2009:
I made sure that the chimney obsured most of the sun, ARTUR, so I'd get a sem-silhouette.

There are places

no one can close

there are moments

you never forget

there are friends

for good and bad times

there are memories

that makes as proud

there are photos

we must share
Wildthing said at 1:22 p.m. on Nov 8, 2009:
I agree, HUBBLEY. And photos can be the visual trigger to cause us to remember certain times, people, and events, sometimes with melancholy, because the past IS gone and cannot be relived or modified.
Loes said at 5:25 p.m. on Nov 8, 2009:

Eduardo.affonso said at 4:55 a.m. on Nov 9, 2009:
I think smoking should be banned not only from the pubs but from the whole planet. Besides all, people don't go to pubs to smoke: they go for the beer, for the friends, for the joy. People can have fun without destroying their health - I presume. But it is a pity old traditional places are closing their doors (and I wonder if the smoke ban isn't just an excuse).
Wildthing said at 5:15 a.m. on Nov 9, 2009:
I think that there are far too many forms of pollution to just pick on one and ban it, EDUARDO. Alcohol is a poison to our bodies, especially the liver: Industry poisons the atmosphere; gambling ruins lives; cell phones have now been proven to cause malignant tumours. The fuel of vehicles, including planes, contain dangerous toxins and heavy metals. War is rife. We are harming the planet in so many ways.

Should we ban everything that is harmful? Maybe. But we won't, so I think that we should look at the big picture, and live and let live.
PhotoPop said at 8:03 a.m. on Nov 9, 2009:
We all pick our poisons, eternity is not an option. So hoist our drinks and celebrate the life we live rather than what others would chose for us.
Mirella said at 11:09 a.m. on Nov 9, 2009:
Bellissima foto, Mike. Nostalgic atmosphere. I agree with you (I always do !) about smoke: I was a smoker and now I'm very glad I'm not smoking any more, but...in Italy too the only polluters are smokers; not the cars that bring students just in front of the school (why not by bus or on foot ?) ,not millions of cell phones ringing every where, not alcohol which, here in Friuli, they drink a lot, morning and evening and they sell wine (very good, indeed, they say) to young people and people already drunk, and so on. Money, money, money ????Ciao, Mike!
Wildthing said at 12:03 p.m. on Nov 9, 2009:
I totally agree with you, JOHN. As Errol Flynn said (allegedly); 'I've lived and done more in fifty years, than most men would do in three lifetimes'. It's not how long you're here, it's how much you enjoy being here that counts.

So true, MIRELLA. Governments allow destruction and pollution that fill the coffers with money.
Candlepower said at 1:31 p.m. on Nov 9, 2009:

PhotoPop said at 7:23 p.m. on Nov 9, 2009:
Mike , one more comment. In the back of my mind in moments like this, I think of a quote attributed to Mae West. She said. "Life is a banquet and most people are starving." I personally believe she is right. So let us
"Party On". Live life without regret.
Wildthing said at 4:20 a.m. on Nov 10, 2009:
We should all make the most of what we have, JOHN. Who knows when it will be taken away from us.
