Cuervo, New Mexico

Cuervo, NM has only three inhabited homes I could verify, all on the same lot. This is a ghost town by any definition. Once an important stop on Route 66 before the climb out of the Canadian River Valley, the Interstate and modern vehicles have made it extraneous.

The unnamed church is also unused. The mountain in the background is Cuervo Mesa  (Cuervo means "raven").

The structure at bottom left is the largest in the entire village but has no name or even a driveway to it. It also isn't close to the road, implying a home of someone important or a lodging place. (back view)

The photo at upper right is across I-20 from the "business district" which consists of an auto repair shop, two offices, and several unused buildings. I couldn't get a picture since "No Parking" signs were liberally posted along the frontage road because of the freeway construction.

More details at CRV Cuervo.

There are ghost towns all over Colorado and New Mexico. Believe me, they aren't like in the movies! They are normally falling down relics, usually log cabins, with "No Trespassing" signs all over them. If you ride into a ghost town with creaking signs and intact windows, beware of an epidemic or other disaster!

Cuervo is in amazing condition indicating recent abandonment. The only structure not of older construction was a mobile home which had a water well drilling rig still set up for drilling in the front yard. Very odd. And hardly "wild west". And nearly all the yards were fenced.

I was born a few miles northeast of Cuervo and so I know a little about it. The large stone building is the old school house. Cuervo isn't truely a ghost town since people do still live there and in more than three houses. Cuervo was mostly ruined by the construction of 1-40 (not I-20) which split it and removed one complete street. The no parking signs are to keep truckers from parking in front of the modern homes along the road side. These truckers leave their engins running at night while they sleep, but keep the residences from sleeping.
