The magnificent Manna Gum is one of the best looking trees in the bush of south eastern Australia. The stunning white upper trunk contrasts with the ribbons of peeling bark hanging from the branches and the dark brown lower trunk. |

The "manna" is a sugary excretion favoured by numerous birds and animals. It was sought after by the aborigines too, who also used parts of the tree for the treatment of diarrhoea and eye disorders. The leaves are a favourite of the Koala. |
The Manna Gum can tolerate a variety of soil types, but the best trees are usually found on the sandy terraces beside mountain streams. These were photographed beside the Valencia Creek and the Avon River. |

The wood of the Manna Gum is not very durable. It is used for some internal furnishings and fittings. It is also makes good firewood and is often used as pulp for making paper. |
