Another Route 66 ghost town, Endee now has no residents on Old 66. The only inhabitants are along NM93 south of the old business district. From the history of Endee, some of the businesses here were saloons.
The name, Endee, wasn't a reference to the fact that this town was near the east end of Route 66 in New Mexico; it is derived from the name of a large ranch in the area: the ND Ranch. It was originally (pre66) an R&R center for local cowboys.
The only surviving business on Route 66 is the motor court; all the others were on NM93, the garage to the north and everything else to the south. The state highway is unpaved (not uncommon in New Mexico) with a half mile jog at 66; Route 66 is unpaved but is a county road. The south bound portion begins across 66 from the motel.
The mast of mailboxes is in the middle of the driveway in front of the intact adobe building. All the houses back behind that building are surrounded by hundreds of junk cars. Of newer vintage than Route 66 days. |
