Karatara - South Africa's first FREE Green University

Karatara is a new university that is being set up in South Africa to educate black South Africans free of charge. It will focus on teaching agriculture, construction, and eco-tourism.

Karatara was founded by Steve Carver (left). The photos show a trip to Karatara in its very early stages by Mally, David and Gaby Skok who will be organizing a fund raiser for Karatara in Boston, Sept 16th 2006.

At left, the town of Karatara, a true relic of the Apartheid era.

Above: the Skok's visit the start of what will be the IT Lab.

Right: Steve shows his fund raising tracking board.

Karatara have been granted use of a very large piece of land close to Knysna, on the Garden Route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.

The land is large enough for an extensive campus, a game reserve, and a small hotel for eco-tourists to come and visit.

Right: Sign up for the Computer Labs, and other activities. At Karatara the students rapidly learn to manage everything themselves.

Very nice use of the new Collage Black template. I like the effect of the white text blocks with the black knock-out type.

Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed reading about it, how it was written, and the layout enhanced it nicely. Educational read and what a great thing!

It's all well intended but what about the other residents in Karatara. I visited recently and found a relatively large white community living there, also in poverty and desperation.
Will your FREE and green university include these people or does the colour of their skin deny them access to FREE education ???? Sounds very familiar to politics of the 1960's

Regardless of how this project is packaged and sold to the world it is RACIST !!!!! Many would hope that by now the time has come to educate all regardless of the colour of their skin.

I sincerely hope this project FAILS and what would probably happen is the same that happened to other FREE institutions given to the "previously disadvantaged" they burned them down.........

To your demise.

Luthor.
