From the local paper: A dozen bands, including Florida A&M's Marching 100, will ignite the musical fireworks for this weekend's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. A relatively new group, an organization made up of the best musicians from seven black colleges and universities, is making its first appearance at the band festival. High school and college musicians from Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi will participate. About 200 strong, the all-star band will lead the Drum Major for Justice Parade, scheduled to start at 1:15 p.m. Monday from Tropicana Field. The parade, with 125 units, will make a quick appearance on Dr. Martin Luther King Street S before turning east on Central Avenue. It will roll to Bayshore Drive and turn north for five blocks before disbanding at Vinoy Park. Typically, about 100,000 spectators turn out, organizers say. Monday's forecast suggests a partly cloudy day with a high temperature near 70 and a minimal chance of rain. Florida A&M will likely be in the parade, said event coordinator Sevell Brown. "We're working hard to make sure that happens," he said. About 25 bands from Pinellas County and around the nation will participate, Brown said. All, he said, put on a highly entertaining show. Spectators should "put on their seat belts and brace themselves," Brown said. |
